Classroom 2.0 and Ning
Wow! There is so much technology on the web that I never knew existed. I am really glad that I had the opportunity to take this class.
I found a lot of great resources on classroom 2.0 that I can use in the class. I also found a lot of great links in the forums. One forum that I was reading on Earth Science had alot of great ideas on how to use Google Earth in the classroom. I did not find anything on Ning in Education.
Thanks Chanisse for all your hard work!

I love learning about all these new “things”. My question to all the people that know more about web 2.0 than me is can pageflakes somehow be embedded in the wiki page.
I have really used the wiki page alot and I can see that I would use the pageflakes for due dates and assignments.

I like google docs. I had no idea that it existed. I like the fact that it is a free program unlike Microsoft Office. It looks like to me it does the very same stuff plus some.
Three ways I could use in my class…1st Sending powerpoints to absent students, 2nd Using the form to find out who is attending our field trip in March and 3rd posting the science fair topics so that the students know what the other students are doing.

I think that teachertube and youtube could be very helpful in the classroom. I found a very funny video about rocks and minerals that I plan on letting the kids watch next week.
I am sure they will probably roll their eyes and think that this video is “cheesy” but I thought it was funny.
On youtube I watched a video on how to knit on a loom. It was very informative. I always think that it is easier to learn a new thing if you can watch someone first, but I am very visual.

I listened to several podcast. I used Education Podcast Network and Skip the Tuition. I really liked the Skip the Tuition one best. I listed to several Earth Science podcast from Stanford and Berkely. The only thing that I think would make it better would be video. The ones I listened to did not have video which made it difficult to follow some of the tables and websites they were talking about. I can see how this would be very useful however. It would be nice to have a professor from Stanford to explain earthquakes.

I have to be honest… I did not love delicious or Library Thing. It just seemed kinda confusing. Maybe it was just me:) On the library thing, I typed in geology and I only got 71 hits (not alot for the effort). I think I would just rather use google or some of the blogs that I have found. It is probably a very helpful tool in classes like English or Literature. So far this has been the only “thing” that I did not think WOW that is useful.

I subscribed to a geology news blog: http://geology.rockbandit.net/
This blog has links to other geology related websites. One very useful one that I hope to use in the next couple of weeks is http://www.mysciencebox.org/map2model. We had the discussion in class on Wed. about topo maps and only one student knew what they were. I was trying to get them to understand that they were important and useful tools. The site www.mysciencebox.org has a great lab on making 3-d models from topo maps. I just have to decide if I really want these 8th graders playing with playdough and water together
.

I am glad that I did this task on a snowday. I spent so long “playing” with all these tools. I made a book using mixbook. LOVE IT!!!!! I am not sure how I could use it in my class, but I had fun. I usually use shutterfly for my photobooks, but I like how these look like scrapbooks. I also played around with weebly. I think that it would be a great idea to have a class website. I may explore this option. I also played with picnic. FUN!

I viewed “The iPod Touch in the Classroom” by Kern Kelly. Probably half the kids in my classes have an ipod touch or got one for Christmas. I think that the kids would respond well to this technology. My husband is currently getting his masters from Auburn and most of his lectures are podcasts on an ipod touch, so the colleges and universities are already using this technology.
I would like to learn more about the apps they offer. The overall video was informative, but the sound was a little low.
